Weather factors into racing on raceway park oval

PALMER — Some untimely weather created some unexpected thrills for race fans during the second running of the Edmonds Import Auto Oval Race June 18 at Alaska Raceway Park outside of Palmer.

Alex Schwochert flipped his No. 11 car during the baby grand heat race, according to a press release issued by the raceway. Schwochert’s car flipped once and landed tires-down. Despite the mishap, Schwochert went on to win the baby grand feature race.

According to race officials, track conditions changed greatly throughout the day, with strong winds and cloud cover.

The races, part of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, included action in three different classes. Dana Pruhs was first in the late models, followed by John Klayum and Garrett Moore. William McDonald won the legends class. Ryan Cote was second and Mike Thomas finished third. Demi Rae McDonald and Dave Elliot finished behind Schwochert in the baby grands class.

Racing continues Saturday, with another Whelen Oval Race. Spectator gates open at 2 p.m. Qualifying is at 4 p.m., and racing starts at 6 p.m. See raceak.com for more information.
