When we studied the gospel of John we found that the number 7 figured prominently. Among the things that occur in groups of seven are, 7 “I am” statements, 7 miracles, 7 discourses and 7 time Jesus said “I am.” It is not surprising then when we see how many things occur in groups of seven in the book of Revelation.

Among them are the 7 letters to 7 churches. There are 7 seals that must be opened, 7 trumpet judgements, 7 bowl judgements and 7 signs in the heavens (in chapter 12). The Holy Spirit uses 7 as an organizing principle and to demonstrate the integrity of the scripture. The scriptures reflect the complex design and precision of their author – God.

The book deals with three groups of people: the nation of Israel, believers in Jesus and earth dwellers. In Revelations God fulfills all of His promises to Israel. They are back in their land, there oppressors are punished and Jesus comes as the conquering King. They missed Him when He came as a the “suffering servant” of Isaiah 53 but they come to realize who Jesus was and they pray for His coming and rejoice at His return.

Throughout the book we find references to those who “keep the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus” (12:17 and 14:12). The “saints” experience tribulation and many die for Jesus but God promises that they will rule and reign with Him, serve Him in His temple and receive great rewards.

The final group that is depicted are this that “dwell on the earth.” This is not merely a reference to their location. It indicates that their thoughts, hopes and motivations are on the things of this world and not on God. They worship the creation instead of the creator. They have rejected God and Jesus. This is why they are taken in by the antichrist and false prophet and why they respond angrily to God judgements. They even celebrate the death of God’s two witnesses and even send each other gifts to celebrate it. In the end, God honors their request to have nothing to do with Him and they are banished from the presence of God for all eternity.

The book concludes with the fall of Babylon – the final complete destruction of the world’s false religious system and perverse economic system. Jesus defeats the oppressors of Israel at Armageddon, reign over the earth for 1000 years then one last time defeats satan and those that follow him in rebellion against God.

Finally we see the marriage supper of the lamb – the uniting for eternity of God and His followers. He also brings into creation a new haven and new earth and rules from a New Jerusalem. God rewards His people for their faithfulness and dries every tear from their eyes.

His plan is completed. Man will rule and reign on the earth in a restored Garden of Eden and we will joyfully worship and serve God forever.
