KNIK — More than 120 Weidner Apartment Homes employees traveled to Camp Togowoods, a Girl Scouts of Alaska-owned camp property off Knik-Goose Bay Road, to ready the camp for the 2014 Girl Scout summer camp season.
Volunteers rebuit tent platforms, cleaned camp buildings, raked gardens and grounds, and performed general repairs to buildings and utilities during the Weidner Cares event May 22 at the 400-acre campus on Three
Mile Lake.
The camp encompasses five ecosystems and includes a wetlands boardwalk. Girl Scouts enjoy nature hikes, environmental education, swimming, canoeing or kayaking and a 35-foot climbing tower.
“We were amazed at the amount of work these dedicated Weidner volunteers were able to accomplish,” said Sue Perles, CEO of Girl Scouts of Alaska. “Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Summer camp is one way Girl Scouts of Alaska invests in Alaska’s girls, our future leaders. That Weidner chose GSAK to be the recipient of its inaugural outreach event in Alaska demonstrates the company’s commitment to providing girls with opportunities for leadership development in a safe and nurturing environment.”
