Kerry Weiland’s pictures and articles took up an entire bulletin board in the entryway of Palmer High School. Considering the astronomical success of the former Palmer High School boys hockey team captain, this is not surprising. The astonishment comes with the reaction of the residents within Palmer High School. Though the bulletin board images have been taken down, Weiland’s message has lasting power.
She actually went here, and she won an Olympic medal. I’ve actually heard of her, saw her on TV and she just spoke to me. That’s legit.
The immediate reaction of one Palmer student mirrors the reaction of the average Palmer student; but look further and you’ll find the roots of Weiland’s story planted deep within the school.
One particular seed is Marissa Ketterman, a freshman.
“She told me to follow my dreams. She told me just to keep pushing through and try and go far with hockey,” Ketterman said. She played on the boys hockey team this year. Her excitement and determination sparked from her hero, Weiland.
“I think it will have a big effect on everybody in the Valley. She really has a great message to pursue your dreams,” Ketterman said.
Weiland’s success hasn’t surprised PE teacher Brandon Blake, who had Weiland as a student in her time at PHS.
“You knew she was going to be special because she led by example. She always worked hard, led by her performance,” he said.
Weiland’s effect before and after her silver medal for the USA women’s hockey team can be seen throughout the blue and white halls of PHS. Her message to persevere carries power. Don’t be surprised to see more success inspire Palmer and the entire Mat-Su Valley a couple of years down the road. The same blue and white halls might be the launching pad for more than one local hero.
