Former Palmer High standout and current Wisconsin All-American Kerry Weiland has been named to the USA 2002 Women's Select Team that will participate in the 4 Nations Cup in November in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.
The event is billed as the showcase for four of the best women's hockey countries. The United States will be joined by Canada, Finland and Sweeden.
Weiland is also entering her senior season with the Wisconsin Badgers.
Last season Weiland tallied eight goals and 14 assists and was a +14, earning All-American honors.
The 5-4 senior defenseman is a three-year letterwinner for the Badgers.
Weiland had a host of honors after her junior campaign including All-WCHA, All-WCHA Academic, All-Big 10 Academic.
Weiland scored both of her team's goals in Wisconsin's 3-2 loss to Minnesota in the WCHA championship game.
Weiland has 106 points in three years with the Badgers. She led all blueliners in the nation with 49 points (12 goals and 37 assists) during her sophomore year. She has been named first team All-WCHA each of the last two seasons, and second team All-WCHA during her freshman year.
The Palmer native has registered five two-goal games in her career and posted a career high four assists against Bemidji State in March of 2000. Weiland has a career +44 rating and has three game winning goals.
Weiland was a standout on the Palmer High boys' team, becoming the first ever female to earn first team all-region honors in Alaska prep hockey history. Weiland captained the Moose during her senior year and garnered numerous awards during her high school career, including being named Palmer's most inspirational player after each of her first three seasons at Palmer.
The Badgers, ranked sixth in the nation, are off to a 2-0 start after sweeping their series with ninth ranked Northeastern.
Weiland registered an assist on Wisconsin's game-winning goal in the final match of the series.
