Duke's Sweets and Treats has expanded with their "Hole in the Wall" cafe opening in Wasilla. They have partnered with Loco Mamas Tamales to offer burgers, melts, and tamales. Picture left to right, Brenda and Darryl Schurman, and Tiffany Morrison and Ron Tracy of Duke's Katie Stavick/Frontiersman

Throughout the Mat-Su, people are familiar with Duke’s Sweets and Treats food truck, serving up ice cream desserts and sundaes, root beer floats, and most famously, Duke’s is famous for Tipsy Scoop, an alcohol-infused ice cream.

With flavors such as Pumpkin Spiced Rum Latte, Tipsy Moose Coffee Maple Fudge Swirl, and Hot Buttered Rum, Duke’s is definitely making its mark for the over-21 dessert connoisseurs.

“It’s outside of the norm and it’s fun, a real unique item,” says Tiffany Morrison, who co-owns Duke’s with her husband Ron Tracy.

But with the lower temperatures and snow on the ground, Duke’s has expanded into a storefront with the opening of Duke’s Hole in the Wall Café.

“Trying to sell ice cream in the winter isn’t easy, and we did it last winter with our trailer, and after talking about it for a while, we said ‘let’s do it,’” said Morrison.

“We decided to this for ourselves, so we decided to do this, so we built the kitchen and here we are,” adds Tracy.

“It’s been picking up, new businesses are always hard, but we’re getting out there,” Tracy said, pointing to online reviews and word-of-mouth he’s heard from customers finding their way in.

“It’s been good and been fun,” Morrison added.

The menu features burgers and patty melts, desserts, and of course Tipsy Scoop. There is also a partnership with Loco Mama’s Tamales, which is owned by Darryl and Brenda Schurman.

“They needed a retail outlet, and they’ve been here; it’s been amazing,” said Morrison.

“We have everything here, the industrial freezer, the kitchen, and storage facilities and it lets us create more tamales and keep our product out there, especially for the holidays, and this helps with distributing our food,” says Schurman, adding she’s enjoyed running a homegrown tamale and catering company with her husband over the last 12 years, and that this café opens up a new opportunity.

“They’ve been here for about a year and we’ve done a lot of things with them so we knew this would be good,” says Tracy.

Customers are encouraged to look for daily specials courtesy of Loco Mama’s including Taco Tuesdays which will feature street tacos, and Tamale Thursdays. There are also special offerings such as rigatoni

Tracy says they will continue to operate their mobile truck, and are excited about the prospect of a storefront.

“We’ve got something different, something special that people just seem to love, and when we’re not out with our trailer, they have somewhere else to get delicious ice cream and desserts.”

Customers can come in and order, go online to place an order and even schedule ahead for delivery.

The café is located in the business park behind the West Parks Highway Annex Mall, which also houses the Ollie North Skate Shop.

Duke’s “Hole in the Wall” Cafe is located at 771 Wasair Drive in Wasilla.
