What the New Testament Teaches on Creation

Last week we began in the Old Testament an investigation of what the Bible teaches about creation. This week we will study what the New Testament says.

Hebrews chapter 11 is known as the “faith chapter.” It recounts great acts of faith throughout the Bible. The chapter starts with the definition of faith then immediately challenges us to have faith that God spoke creation into existence. “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible” (Hebrews 11:3). Remember, science has no explanation for “something” can come from “nothing.”

The apostle Paul in Romans 4:17 describes God as one who, “calls into being that which does not exist.” Peter rebukes people mocking the return of Jesus by reminding them that “by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed” (2 Peter 3:5).

Since Jesus is one with the Father, we are taught that He created all things. John 1, 3 and 10 states, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being… the world was made through Him.”

The apostle Paul also attributes creation to Father and Son. 1 Corinthians 8:6 states, “there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.”

Additional references to Jesus as creator include Colossians 1:16 “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible…all things have been created through Him and for Him.” Finally Hebrews 1:2 states “in these last days [God] has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.”

In Romans chapter 1 Paul warns us that ungodly people try to hide the truth about God – including His role as creator. “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened” (Romans 1:20-21). Biologic, geologic and cosmologic evolution are our modern foolish speculations.

I pray that this survey will encourage you to have faith in the truth that God is the creator. He is not reliant on any natural or physical mechanisms to accomplish what He did by His word. Always remember Hebrews 11: 6 “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”
