Things to do in the Mat-Su is a weekly feature in the Frontiersman. This week the list includes Friday Fling and the July 4 holiday activities.
Palmer’s iconic market, the Friday Fling is free to enter and a family-friendly environment. Every week is a chance to shop for locally grown produce, handmade goods, and fresh meals from food trucks. Plus, there’s always a variety of activities and musical acts at every Fling.

Alaska Raceway Park is hosting a 4th of July weekend of races starting Friday evening. Gates open at 3 p.m, qualifying is at 5 p.m. and races start at 6 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday feature the top eliminators on the strip, with gates opening at 10 a.m.. The Time Trials start at 11 a.m. and eliminations begin at 2 p.m.
Daily admission is $ 15 for adults, $12 for military or seniors, and kids 10 and under get in for free. Weekend bands and camping are available. Anyone who fuels up at Tesora along the way can bring a receipt of 8 gallons or more to get one general admission ticket. Tickets need to be dated after July 1st. American Legion Post 15 is hosting a concert featuring live music from local bands like Those Guys. There will be food, a beer garden, and an outdoor dance floor. This event is open to the public.

A number of Valley residents took it upon themselves to host a two-day festival with a parade on Independence Day in Palmer, featuring over 50 vendors and an assortment of contests and activities.
Vendors will be selling goods from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the MTA Events Center in downtown Palmer, near Palmer Junior Middle School. The parade starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Glacier View River Retreat is hosting its July 4 car launch Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Organizers plan to launch a Lexus, a GMC Jimmy, a Ford Explorer, a Pontiac Grand Am, and a Volkswagen Passat.

Alliance Baseball League Valley rivals Palmer and Wasilla will play at Hermon Brothers Field Saturday at 1 p.m. The concessions stand will be open and the menu will include potato bowls, which pays tribute to the Palmer-Wasilla Potato Bowl football rivalry.
