What’s MEA up to now?

Is Lee Jordan taking advantage of Matanuska Electric Association ratepayers? It sure looks like it.

The man who has led the charge for a coal plant over the objection of ratepayers is up for re-election early next year. Although state law prohibits the use of co-op money to promote the candidacy of a board member, Jordan has been featured every weeknight for the last two months in an expensive feel-good ad on Channel 2 that we ratepayers are picking up the tab for.

Meanwhile, fellow board member Peter Burchell, who does not share Jordan’s pro-management, pro-coal stance, is also up for re-election. Predictably, he has not gotten the same favorable treatment.

While this kind of contempt for ratepayers and their money is par for the course with MEA management, it is surprising that a man with Jordan’s reputation would go along with it instead of defending the interest of those who elected him.
