WASILLA - The Wasilla High School girls basketball team used a 13-2 first-quarter run to cruise past the Palmer Moose 46-25 at WHS on Tuesday.
The Warriors led by 11 points after the first quarter and 16 points at the half, as Wasilla improved to 13-4 overall and 7-0 in Northern Lights Conference play.
Palmer sophomore guard Matti Cox was tagged for two early fouls in the game. Wasilla head coach Jeannie Hebert-Truax said with Palmer's fastest player in early foul trouble, the Warriors were able to take advantage. Herbert-Truax said eventually Palmer had more success against the Warriors system when the Moose were able to use Cox to break the WHS press.
Junior Hillarie Putnam led the Warriors with a game-high 14 points. Freshman Jenna Johnson added 10.
Sophomore Ashley Swetzof led the Moose with six points. Cox and fellow sophomore Nicole Kenney each chipped in five points.
Palmer (17-5 overall, 6-3) is now off until its hosts Wasilla at PHS on March 4.
Wasilla starts a four-game road trip tonight with the first of two nonconference games at Sitka. On Monday Wasilla will travel to Homer, and on Tuesday the Warriors are at Skyview.
