WHS off to strong start

ANCHORAGE — Regardless of where local teams finished over the weekend, The Mini meet at The Dome in Anchorage could be called a success.

Why?

Because it signaled an early start for local prep track and field programs. And with that in mind, Wasilla’s win in the girls’ team standings Saturday is a nice added bonus.

Junior Morgan Dampier won the 100-meter and Wasilla finished first in the 1,600 relay as the Warriors finished first in the team standings with 48 total points.

“It’s great,” Wasilla head coach Gary Howell said of the earlier start for his athletes. “We have a full calendar every single weekend from here on out.”

The first meet of the 2011 season comes about two weeks sooner than the first meet of the 2010 campaign, Howell said.

“It’s tremendous,” Howell said. “The more the kids can race, the better we can become.”

Dampier used a time of 13.24 seconds to win the 100 and finish just ahead of teammate Dajanae Harris, who was second. The junior also teamed up with Cori Schleich, Mandi Rinngenberg and Alyssa Hutchins to win the 1,600 relay.

“She looks fantastic,” Howell said of Dampier, a returning state champion for the Warriors.

The Colony Knights finished second during Friday’s portion of The Mini. Senior Shellina Irwin, the defending state champion in the shot put, won that event with a throw of 37 feet, 8 inches. Her mark was nearly two feet farther than a 2010 season-high that earned her the state title.

Colony sophomores Audrey Michaelson (3,200) and Makenzie Thompson (800) both finished second for the Knights.

Palmer senior Erin LaMere finished second in the shot put.

Palmer senior Jim McCall led Mat-Su boys with a first-place finish in the long jump. McCall was also fourth in the 100.

All of the Valley programs will return to The Dome in Anchorage to compete in the Big C Relays April 8-9.
