To the editor:
Salmon is one of Alaska’s top livelihoods and a major source of food for most Alaskans. There is a bill to allow GMO salmon to our table and the deadline to oppose it is April 26. For those who do not know what GMOs are, GMO stands for “genetically modified.” These are unnatural modifications; for example, plants with animal, plants with unlike plants.
Studies have shown “farm salmon” have a higher bacterial content and are not as hardy as wild salmon. Those that have cross-bred with wild salmon have produced weaker fish. “They” said that wouldn’t happen.
So, if farm salmon are cross breeding with wild, what disasters await with GMOs cross-breeding with wild salmon? Will we have a perfect food source go extinct? How are these fish modified?
There are too many negative potentials to chance the corruption of a perfect food. Why would someone want to corrupt it in the first place? Do they have an alternate agenda? Is that agenda only as noxious as greed? Because if the GMO salmon follow the same course as GMO plants, fruits and veggies, we may be starving or poisoned. A Canadian study forced short-term use of GMO Round-up Ready Corn has already caused stores of poisons held in a person’s body. The body is unable to eliminate it. In many countries, the use of GMO plants caused failure of farms and food shortages as GMOs are less hardy.
We need every voice to say, “No! This is unacceptable!” If everyone leaves the effort up to everyone else, then everyone does nothing! All are needed to be the voice of the people, by the people and for the people! Please do this by one of the following:
