William “Bill” Aldis Browne
William “Bill” Aldis Browne, 69, passed away March 9, 2020, at MSRMC in Palmer, Alaska.
Bill was a familiar face in his community. A member of the Meadow Lakes Community Council, over the years he served in several board positions, including president, vice president, community safety officer, and often lent his sonorous voice and affable personality as auctioneer at the annual Holiday White Elephant Sale.
Bill served for almost two decades on the West Lakes Fire Service Area Board of Supervisors, mostly as chair. This allowed him to participate in and contribute to the growth and development that has taken place — including the combining of two fire service areas and the construction of the new flagship fire station.
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1950, Bill was Yankee to his core. However, craving new opportunities and open spaces, he moved to Alaska in 1996, traveling the Alcan to his new home, Meadow Lakes. Whenever time allowed, he could be found on a pack trip or hunt, paddling a canoe, or simply camping someplace quiet enjoying the company of friends.
In 1997, Bill returned to making his living as a residential remodeling contractor, just as he had done in Connecticut, and was known for his dependability and integrity.
He joined the McKinley Mountainmen Muzzle Loading Rifle Club in 1998 and served in various positions wherever he was needed, including president, vice president, shoot coordinator, and newsletter editor.
Bill enjoyed working with his hands and crafted custom knives and jewelry. He had a keen interest in the history of weaponry and martial arts, and as a young man he earned a black belt and served as an instructor at his dojo.
Bill is survived by his wife, Amanda Browne of Meadow Lakes, Alaska; sons, Manuel Browne of Wasilla, Alaska, and Tomás (Danielle); granddaughter, Adalyn Browne of Hubbardton, Vermont; brothers, Charles (Rosemary) Browne of Naples, Florida and G. Price of Passau, Germany; and nephews, Timothy (Jennifer) Browne of Queens, New York, and Matthew (Rachel) Browne of Merrick, New York.
A celebration of life will be held at 4:00 p.m. April 24, 2021, at Legacy Funeral Home, Alaska Heritage Memorial Chapel, 1015 South Check Street, Wasilla, Alaska 99654, phone: 907-373-3840.
