Willow firefighter dies due to natural causes while preparing to depart for a call

A Willow firefighter preparing to depart for a call died early Saturday morning.

Roger Delongchamp, 66, died as result of natural causes just after 3 a.m. Saturday morning.

“Firefighter Delongchamp was in a fire truck preparing to depart to a call of service and lost consciousness,” according to an online dispatch posted by the Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers responded to the Willow Fire Department at Mile 70 of the Parks Highway at about 2:15 a.m. Saturday. Mat-Su Borough Emergency Services and Life Med were also on scene. Next of kin has been identified.

“It is with heavy hearts we say goodbye to our brother today. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and fellow responders. We ask to respect the privacy of the family during this most difficult of time,” Mat-Su Director of Emergency Services Ken Barkley said in a press release issued by the borough.
