WILLOW — A mere two seconds separated the top two mushers in the Willow Junior 100 sled dog race.
Conway Seavey hit the finish line at Vern Halter’s Dream A Dog Farm with a total time of 9 hours, 3 minutes and 9 seconds, and finished only two seconds ahead of runner-up Ben Harper of Wasilla.
Three of the top 5 mushers also finished within a span of about five minutes. Noah Pereira, who finished third with a total time of 9:43:21, was only 66 seconds faster than fourth-place Andrew Nolan.
Taylor Steel used a time of 9:48:24 to finish fifth. Eleven teams completed the race.
The group of mushers hit the trail last Friday at 4 p.m. at Dream A Dog Farm and raced for 50 miles before taking a 10-hour layover at Grandpa Joes Lake. Following the mandatory layover, they made the 50-mile return trip to the Halter residence.
