WASILLA — David Johnston continues to amaze.
The 43-year-old Willow ultrarunner shattered what some thought was an untouchable record en route to his win during the Iditarod Trail Invitational. Competing in the foot race division, Johnson covered the 350 miles from Knik Lake to McGrath in just more than four days. His official time of 4 days, 1 hour, 38 minutes put him into McGrath at 2:38 p.m., Thursday. Johnston’s new record is about 14 hours better than the prior mark, held by Steve Reifenstuhl, who finished the 2005 foot race in 4 days and 15 hours.
Johnston also scored his second straight win in the race. Last year, Johnston used a time of 4 days, 19 hours and 13 minutes to win the runner division. In 2012, Johnston and his wife, Andrea Hambach, tied for sixth, finishing in 8 days, 17 hours and 47 minutes.
Kevin Breitenbauch won the bike division, finishing the 350 miles in 2 days, 4 hours and 43 minutes.
The annual race follows the Iditarod Trail from Knik Lake to McGrath through Skwentna, Finger Lake, Puntilla, Rohn and Nikolai.
