WILLOW — Idyllic winter weather was on tap for the first full day of the 56th annual WIllow State Winter Carnival festivities Saturday morning. About a half-foot of snow fell the previous evening and continued throughout the day.
Saturday was the first of two weekends of family fun-filled activities at the Willow Community Center. Although the carnival is half over, the coming weekend brings another three full days of activities. Friday, Feb. 3 marks the start of the Willow 300 Dog Sled Race. As of the latest available data, 37 mushers will be vying for a $15,000 purse.
Saturday's schedule includes a vintage snow machine race, poker run, and homesteader events. Sunday morning, the Sven Eriksson 25k tour-bike-ski-run is on-tap. Homesteader events continue and an afternoon tug of war contest winds things down.
Midway Carnival will feature rides and games throughout the weekend. A PTA-sponsored pancake breakfast takes place 8-11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Food is available inside the community hall. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. Admission to all events is free. Parking is $1.00 per vehicle. For more information, call 907-495-6633.
