The inaugural Ugly Christmas Sweater 5-kilometer race was cancelled Saturday. Set to run from the AT&T Sports Center along the Palmer-Wasilla Highway to the Frontiersman building and back, the race was cancelled due to 50 mph winds.
About 130 registered to run and will have to find another chance to wear their ugly Christmas sweaters.
“We didn’t feel like it was safe or enjoyable for people,” race organizer Sammye Pokryfki said about the decision to cancel the run. “I hated to cancel it, but we’d like to do it next year. Maybe we will try to have an indoor backup in case the weather is bad.’
Proceeds of the cancelled 5-K will go to the Christmas Friendship Dinner.
Pokryfki said those who had registered showed up to collect their t-shirt, and many were wearing their ugly sweaters.
“It was pretty cute, it would have been funny to see,” she said.
