The Matanuska Valley Colony reunion committee announces that the winner of its 75th anniversary art contest is Douglas Girard of Palmer.

His winning work of art is an original oil painting that is titled “Our New Home.” Girard says, “the woman and child represent the future of the Colony and the background shows the men building a new Colony home.”

There were many entries in the contest but this one featuring the mother and child brought emotional memories for the “Colony Kids” who remember what their parents went through in those early days.

Committee member Tiny DePriest said, “This one reached out and grabbed me by the heart and brought a tear to my eyes.”

Commemorative posters will be available for purchase at an open house reception from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday at the Colony House Museum at 316 East Elmwood Ave., in Palmer.

Visitors are welcome to stop by to meet the artist and get their poster signed just in time for Mother’s Day. The price of $20 per poster will be used to help defray costs associated with staging the Matanuska Valley Colony 75th reunion activities during this year’s Colony Days celebration.
