On Tuesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued its first winter weather advisory of the season. A winter storm watch has been issued starting Tuesday evening through Thursday afternoon, with snow, including blowing and heavy snow expected, along with mixed precipitation possible.
A major winter storm could bring a variety of weather to the Matanuska Valley, especially to Palmer, Wasilla, Sutton and Chickaloon, tonight through Thursday. There is a chance for a brief period of light snow starting late Tuesday night through early Thursday morning. Winds out of the northeast, with gusts reaching 25 to 40 mph through the Palmer and Wasilla areas will result in blowing snow, with a 70% chance of precipitation and new snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
On Wednesday, the chances of snow increase to 90% with 1 to 2 inches of snow likely, and later turning into a rain/snow mix later in the evening.
Travel could be hazardous, and areas of blowing snow may significantly reduce visibility on the roads.
Currently, NWS is predicting that the chances of snow will diminish as the week rolls on, with Saturday seeing partly sunny skies in time for Veterans Day.
