Woman charged with assault with board

WASILLA -- An Anchorage woman faces a felony assault charge after allegedly hitting her sister in the head with a board during a fight at the sister's Wasilla residence.

Shannon Davenport, 33, is charged with third-degree assault in the Sept. 21 incident at 4861 Binnacle Drive. She is scheduled to appear in Palmer District Court for a pre-indictment hearing Oct. 10.

Alaska State Trooper Paul Wegrzyn said in an affidavit filed in Palmer courthouse that he responded to a domestic violence call at 12:05 a.m. When he arrived, he heard a woman yelling inside the residence and saw Davenport on the ground in the road nearby.

Davenport had a bruise on her left eye and had a "very strong odor of alcohol on her breath and person, slurred speech and difficulty standing," Wegrzyn's report said.

When he went inside the residence to talk with Davenport's sister, Kristi Charles, the trooper said he saw a piece of wood about two feet long, one inch thick and four inches wide on the kitchen table. A silver loop earring was on the floor near the table, he said.

Charles had asked Davenport over for the evening and they began drinking, according to the affidavit. They began arguing about Davenport's children and the woman became "very violent" toward Charles, the report said.

Wegrzyn said Davenport got a piece of wood from a disassembled shelf in the living room and used it to hit Charles near her right ear. Charles told the trooper she was "dazed" by the blow, according to the report.

Davenport's boyfriend, Robert Wright, tried to break up the fight and Davenport ripped his T-shirt nearly off, the report said. Wegrzyn said Davenport admitted hitting Charles, adding that Charles also hit Davenport.

Investigation showed that Charles got a protective order against Davenport two years ago for similar circumstances, Wegrzyn said.

Davenport was lodged at Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility.
