Women's shooting event set for Sunday

MAT-SU -- Hunting season in Alaska is well under way and a local hunting club is offering a first-ever women's hunt day Sunday to help women meet other shooters and polish their shooting skills.

Lulie Williams of Eagle River is organizing the event, and she said the idea was to provide an opportunity for women shooters to get together. It's also an opportunity for women who train pointers or retrievers to get some practice in with their dogs, Williams said.

The event is being held at Falcon Ridge, off Ayershire Road on Point MacKenzie. Falcon Ridge is a member-only hunting club, which offers 300 acres of hunting ground and sells game birds for hunting and retrieving practice.

Williams said the event will kick off at 10 a.m. with clay pigeon practice, and shooters can purchase chukars for $12 each or ring-necked pheasants for $18 each. Participants can purchase as many as they want, and, depending on their desired use for the birds, either dogs or shooters will be provided.

Williams said participants should bring No. 6 shot or smaller. For more information about the event, contact Williams during the day at (907) 561-6111, in the evenings at (907) 696-0221 or e-mail her at lulie@gci.net. Although the preregistration period for the event has closed, Williams said additional participants may take part as long as space is available.
