WASILLA — A pair of Valley teams wrestled to runner-up finishes in tournaments over the weekend.
Five Palmer wrestlers won their weight class to help lead the Moose to a second-place finish at the Bethel Invitational in Bethel. Wasilla crowned two champs en route to a runner-up finish at the Glenn Vandergaw Invitational at Dimond High School in Anchorage.
Palmer placed 10 wrestlers in the finals and finished with 176.5 points in the Bethel Invite. Two weight classes featured an all-Palmer final. Christian Kurka pinned teammate Bryan Deyer to win the 160-pound class. Austin Farris earned a major decision against fellow Moose Travis Wheeler at 220. In a third class, Palmer’s Austin Kollander and Keith Anderson finished as the top two wrestlers in the round-robin heavyweight bracket.
Jason Watkins beat Bethel’s Mian Alexie-Leonard in the 138-pound final, Levi Farris defeated Bethel’s Haley O’Brien 12-3 in the 145-pound final and Zion Rogers used a 6-5 win over Bethel’s Jayvin Williams to win at 182.
Odin Andersen also advanced to the finals and finished second at 98 pounds.
Host Bethel won its tournament with 263.5 points.
Defending state champion Micah Mathis helped Wasilla finish second in the Vandergaw tournament. Mathis placed first in a round-robin bracket at 113 pounds. Wasilla’s Samuel Wolff defeated South’s Weston Martin 9-4 in the 138-pound match of the final round. Berit Sturgeon (132), Andrue Shepersky (152) and Cablin Wilson (182) also advanced to the finals and placed second.

Hawks fourth in Nikiski
NIKISKI — The Houston Hawks posted a fourth-place finish in the Peninsula Duals at Nikiski High School Saturday.
Kodiak beat Houston 43-35 in the third-place dual.
Houston, seeded fourth in the duals bracket, opened with a 60-6 first-round win over the Kodiak JV. The Hawks followed with a 60-18 duals victory over Seward, before suffering a 44-32 semifinal loss to top-seeded Homer.
In duals on Friday, Houston beat Nikiski 41-37 and Dillingham 39-32.
Su Valley grappler wins in Interior
FAIRBANKS — Susitna Valley heavyweight Marshall Pinard pinned his way to another title.
Pinard stuck West Valley’s Jake Foshee 22 seconds into the second period during the final round to win the 285-pound class of the Hutchison Meltdown at Hutchison High School in Fairbanks Saturday afternoon.
Pinard finished 3-0 in the tournament, and needed less than a minute combined to win his first two matches in the class.
Pinard pinned Delta’s Robert Ellis in 29 seconds, and followed with a 19-second pin of West Valley’s Bernard Ishnook in the semifinals.
