Wrestling tourney makes history

WASILLA — Alaska USA Wrestling spent the weekend breaking records and making history.

A wrestling association that features more than 1,400 members hosted the largest wrestling tournament ever to be staged in the 49th state on Friday and Saturday at the Wasilla Multi-Use Sports Complex.

The two-day set of tournaments also featured Alaska’s first women’s freestyle tournament.

Event coordinator Ed Gravley said a record-number of athletes competed in the 2008 championships that featured both freestyle and Greco-Roman grappling.

More than 650 wrestlers participated in the freestyle championships, 240 wrestled in the Greco-Roman divisions and 38 wrestlers took the mat in the first female freestyle tournament.

Gravley said Alaska USA Wrestling membership is also at an all-time high. That, coupled with the fact it was standing room only during most of the weekend at the Wasilla Multi-Use Sports Complex, are sure signs that interest for the sport is surging in the Last Frontier.

“It’s booming again,” Gravley said.

Twenty-seven teams from across the state were represented in the tournament, Gravley said. Athletes hailed from areas such as Bethel, Kotzebue, Fairbanks, Juneau, the Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley.

The Valley in particular is one area in which the interest is really growing. There are now six wrestling clubs in the Mat-Su Valley — the Mat-Su Mat Men, Tri-Valley Wrestling Club, the Arctic Warriors, the North Star Wrestling Club and the Mid-Valley Wrestling Club, the oldest of it’s kind in the Mat-Su area.

Tri-Valley, a club that features more than 130 grapplers, won the overall team title at the 2008 championships. Tri-Valley won both the kids division (218 points) and the cadet/junior division (152 points) en route to winning the overall championship with 232 total points. Tri-Valley finished 32 points ahead of second-place Cook Inlet Wrestling Club.

Athletes within the local clubs began practicing with their teams in March, Gravley said. The club wrestling season normally starts after the conclusion of the high school and middle school seasons.
