Former Valley homesteader Yolanda Bernice "Cookie" Riggs Baim died May 18, 2001 in Coos Bay, Ore.
A small gathering of family and friends took place May 23 at the Baim residence in Bandon, Ore., to celebrate Mrs. Baim's life.
Mrs. Baim was born on March 23, 1923 in Mendocino, Calif., in the heart of the Redwood Valley. She attended schools in Mendocino County and was married to Charles "Chuck" Baim at Alameda Naval Station in 1947.
The couple moved to Alaska to homestead soon after marrying. They had two children — Dennis, who lives in Valdez now, and daughter June Eloise Demming, who preceded her in death in 1968.
The family entered the commercial fishing industry in Alaska, and in 1997, the couple retired to Bandon, Ore.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Baim; son, Dennis Baim of Valdez; niece, Sharon Powell of Coos Bay, Ore.; sister, Cecelia Mack of Willits, Calif.; brother, Luman S. Riggs of Willits, Calif.; and the Mack and Riggs families.
