Meet Aimee Pike. Aimee is a great example of a young angler who is passionate about fishing. And a recent catch she made at Lake Louise has gotten her some attention from media sources and some well-deserved praise from those on social media.
The burbot she’s holding in the adjacent photo was brought to an ADF&G office and weighed as part of our Trophy Fish program. The official weight was recorded at 9 pounds, 2 ounces. The fish measured 34.5 inches. A very nice fish for an angler of any age. This fish earned her a Youth category trophy fish certificate. The minimum weight requirement for a Youth category trophy burbot is 6 pounds.
We asked Aimee to share some of her experiences with us. Below are answers in her own words.
Q: Who was the first person to take you fishing and what was the first species of fish you ever caught?A: “My mom, who loves fishing, started taking me fishing a few years ago. Now I go with my mom and older brother Ryan. I have fished at the Eklutna tail race, and Willow Creek where I’ve caught silvers and pinks, but my first catch was a humpy.”
Q: What is your most memorable fishing experience?A: ‘I would have to say my most memorable experience so far has been my burbot. I got to travel to Lake Louise for the first time, hang out and go ice fishing with my best friend and her family. I didn’t know what to expect, but it was a lot of fun.’
Q: What do you like most about fishing?A: ‘I like the excitement of being out fishing and being in the outdoors, and catching the big ones!’
