Young runners compete in borough meet

More than 500 elementary student-athletes competed in the Mat-Su Borough Elementary Cross-Country Championships at Colony High School last week.

Runners in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades from more than a dozen different elementary schools competed in the meet.

The student-athletes took the course despite rainy conditions that made for a wet and slick course.

Pioneer Peak's Alyssa Hutchins won the fourth-grade girls' race with a time of 11 minutes and 45 seconds. Hutchins was 1:43 faster than second place Jessica Polokala.

Abe Meyerhofer of Larson Elementary won the fourth-grade boys' race with a time of 13:37. Meyerhofer edged Iditarod's Shawn Smith by just one second.

Goose Bay Elementary's Zoey Whittington won the fifth and sixth-grade girls run with a time of 12:08.

Academy Charter's Kenyon Depriest was the top runner in the boys' fifth-and-sixth grade race with a time of 11:17.
