Youth-only fishing Saturday at Eklutna Tailrace

PALMER — Saturday’s a day for the kids at Eklutna Tailrace.

The Board of Fisheries approved a youth-only fishing day, set for Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Eklutna Tailrace, located at Mile 3.5 of the Old Glenn Highway. A portion of the waterway from the confluence with the Knik River upstream to the pedestrian bridge will be open exclusively for anglers 15 and under. The remainder of the tailrace is open to fishing for anglers of any age.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has partnered with Ehmann Outdoors and Cabela’s to host the event. Volunteers will be available to help children with the basic techniques of fishing, but anglers are responsible for providing their own fishing gear and equipment.

The event will also include instruction and demonstration regarding topics such as knot tying, casting, cleaning and fish identification.

The daily bag and possession limit is one king salmon 20 inches or longer, and one in possession. The limit for fish less than 20 inches in 10 per day, 10 in possession. Youth anglers must carry a free Harvest Record Card available at any license vendor. King salmon over 20 inches harvested must be recorded immediately.

For more information or to volunteer during the event, email ehmannoutdoors@gmail.com.
