14 new COVID-19 cases reported in Alaska Sunday

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services announced 14 new COVID-19 cases in the state and an additional coronavirus related death.

A 71-year-old Anchorage resident has died after testing positive for COVID-19 on March 28. DHSS officials said the person acquired the infection outside of Alaska, but was hospitalized in the state. The individual also had preexisting health issues. Six Alaskans have now died due to coronavirus.

Of the 14 new positive cases reported Sunday, seven are in Fairbanks. There are four in Anchorage, two in Juneau and one in Seward.

A staff member at McLaughlin Youth Center in Anchorage has also tested positive, according to DHSS.

“Regarding the situation at McLauglin, please know (the Department of Juvenile Justice) is working closely with state and local public health officials to ensure that MYC residents, staff and anyone who may have been in contact with this positive case is away of the situation and knows what we plan to do,” DHSS commissioner Adam Crum said in a press release issued Sunday.

There are 185 total positive COVID-19 cases in Alaska, as of Sunday. Anchorage has 85 cases and there are 53 in the Fairbanks and North Pole areas. There are only four positive cases reported in the Mat-Su Borough, three in Palmer and one in Wasilla.
