WASILLA — The 2023 Iditarod was an eventful race with numerous milestones to reflect on.
Knik musher Ryan Redington won the Iditarod for the first time when he crossed the finish line in Nome within 8 days, 21 hours, 12 minutes and 58 seconds.
This was Redington's 15th run in the race. He's one of six Redingtons that finished the Iditarod since it started 50 years ago. He is the grandson of Joe Redington who's commonly referred to as the "Father of the Iditarod."
Ryan also won the Alaska Air Transit Spirit of Iditarod Award, Bristol Bay Native Corporation Fish First Award, Ryan Air Gold Coast Award, and the Northrim Bank Achieve More Award.
“It is difficult to fully express the magnitude of Ryan’s win today. Iditarod CEO, Rob Urbach stated in a press release. "His grandfather envisioned the Iditarod 51 years ago, and Ryan’s fully honored the Redington legacy with grit, determination and love for his dogs that will inspire not only future generations of Redington mushers but all of Iditarod Nation."
This year's race marked the 51st anniversary of the Iditarod.
According to a press release, the total race purse reached $500,000 which will be distributed amongst the mushers.
Knik musher Jason Mackey received the 2023 Red Lantern Award as the final finisher. This award is a longstanding tradition in the Iditarod.
Mackey received $1,000 and the honor of extinguishing the widow’s lamp on the burled arch in Nome, symbolizing when roadhouses were used in Alaska and extinguishing the lamp is a signal that no other mushers were on the trail.
Mackey ran this year's race with both his brother’s and mother’s ashes in his sled all the way from Willow to Nome to pay tribute to their memory.
Mackey and other award winners were recognized for their achievements during the 2023 Iditarod finishers banquet on Sunday, March 19.
