AASA soars to celebrate Alaska’s aviation centennial

WASILLA — The Alaska Air Show Association, in conjunction with several businesses and organizations, has been commemorating Alaska’s 100th anniversary of flight this summer.

Alaska-based war birds and classic aircraft have flown to four regions of the 49th state with events in Cordova, Valdez, Talkeetna, Homer, King Salmon, Dillingham, Bethel, Aniak, Galena, Unalakleet, Nome, Kotzebue, Bettles Lodge, Fairbanks and Anchorage to commemorate this historic time in Alaska’s history. This “barnstorming” is proposed to stop in Wasilla from 1 to 3 p.m., on July 27.

The association has coordinated with the city Greater Wasilla Chamber of Commerce to locate a strategic area for a static display at the Wasilla Airport for historic aircraft where the community meet the pilots and view the aircraft upon arrival.

The aircraft might include a pair of T-6s, a Japanese Zero, American Pilgrim and Gullwing Stinson. An aerial demonstration will also be conducted as traffic and weather permit. In addition, the association will provide posters for pilot autographs and will incorporate a youth outreach component, including free trinkets and door prizes, and display a historical and educational traveling museum exhibit.

Rides in the vintage aircraft and war birds are also available. Contact Jane Dale at 715-6708 for more information.
