TALKEETNA — Alaska Chamber Singers will perform at 3:30 p.m., April 15 in Talkeetna at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar.
Led by conductor David Hagen and accompanied by Susan Wingrove on piano, the 40-voice chorus will present a variety of choral works, from Handel to sacred motets to folk songs to rousing spirituals.
The Talkeetna concert is part of the group’s 25th anniversary celebration, which also includes performances at 8 p.m., April 21 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 3900 Wisconsin St., Anchorage, and at 4 p.m., April 22 St. Andrew Church, 16300 Domain Lane, Eagle River.
The season finale features two highly esteemed, nationally recognized artists: choral conductor Anton Armstrong and composer Libby Larsen. Alaska Chamber Singers commissioned the Grammy winning Larsen to compose a new choral piece for this concert, a setting of nature poetry by an Alaskan writer accompanied by strings.
Rumor has it the concert may also feature the presence of the writer himself, former Alaska poet laureate Tom Sexton.
Armstrong also will work with Anchorage choir students from Chugiak and West high schools from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 20 at Chugiak High School.
Alaska Chamber Singers was founded by local music legend Elvera Voth in 1986. Hagen has conducted the group since 1995.
