While there is fresh snow on the ground, the Alaska growing season is in the air at Raven Hall at the Alaska State Fairgrounds as final preparations are underway for the 2nd Annual Alaska Farm and Garden Show coming this weekend.
This year, there is a focus on sustainable living, as dozens of vendors will be on hand to offer everything from homesteading endeavors for your garden, farm, home, or remote cabin, to homemade jams, jellies, tinctures, and sourdough bread, and everything in between.
There will also be free seminars from experts offering valuable advice you need to help your projects succeed. The classes are happening throughout the weekend, giving attendees opportunities to learn all about raising, feeding, and butchering livestock and chickens, growing fruit trees in Alaska, baking sourdough, milling your own flour, raising bees, caring for pets, gardening, learning about the Alaska Farm Bureau, and so much more!
Senator Dan Sullivan will be delivering a keynote address, highlighting the impact of youth in agriculture, celebrating their essential role in strengthening our local food systems and communities. He is scheduled to speak on Saturday, January 31 at 2:00 p.m.
State Senator Shelley Hughes will be on hand for an “on the stump” conversation, specifically on agriculture in Alaska. Beginning at 1:00 on both Saturday and Sunday, attendees will have 60 seconds to hop on the stump with Shelly and let her guess the agriculture issues that are important to you. She will also share her insights and take audience questions on Saturday, January 31, 2:30 p.m. at Raven Hall.
The show runs Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
