Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Alfred B. Willis, age 98, passed away in Wasilla, AK on May 28, 2023. Born in Barstow, CA, Alfred graduated high school in 6/1943 and followed his passion working at the local fire department. In 9/1943, Alfred enlisted into the U.S. Navy at the age of 18 years old as a fire control man O third class, and fought in WWll. He pursued his father’s WWl recruitment history to Navy, and was assigned on the Destroyer USS Preston (DD-795) as a range finder where he remained until being honorably discharged on 4/9/46.
After being honorably discharged where he was awarded numerous awards and medals, he followed his heart and married his high school sweetheart Carolina MacKay on 4/9/1948 in Barstow, CA where they raised two children. In 1973 Alfred moved his family to Alaska where they settled in Nikiski, AK and became the fire chief for the Nikiski Fire department in 1978 until he retired in 1990. In 1996 Alfred relocated to Sequim, WA where he enjoyed retirement with his family until his wife passed in 2012. In 2014, Alfred moved back to Wasilla, AK where he remained until his death.
Alfred is preceded in death by his parents Charlie and Mary Willis, Siblings Edward, Richard, Carol and Mary Ann. Wife Carolina Willis and their infant son William Brice Willis. Alfred is survived by his daughter Mary Alden, son Charlie N. Willis (Nancy), grandkids Garrett Willis, Tarah Van Natta (Joe) Callie Willis, Jared Alden (Staci) great-grandchildren Braeden & Blake Willis and Jhett Dawson
A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion Post 35 at 4180 W. Tweed Ct. Wasilla on July 1, 2023 at 2 P.M.
In lieu of flowers donation can be made to Battle Dogs or the Nikiski Firefighters Association.
