Author to speak at Women’s Connection luncheon

Author and nationally known speaker Pauletta Staley will speak at the Mat-Su Women’s Connection luncheon on Monday, Sept. 21 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Evangelo’s Restaurant in Wasilla. Staley will share how women leave a legacy by their lives and words. The event will also feature a panel of military women who will share the challenges they face in the military. Daybreak plans open house

Daybreak Services Coordinators are inviting the public to come to an open house at their new suite of offices at 550 South Alaska Street, Suite 202, in Palmer on Monday, September 21, from 3 6 p.m. Daybreak staff and board members will be present to talk about the changes in the delivery of health care services that have been mandated with an effective date of July 1, 2016. Service providers and clients are encouraged to attend.

Youth farming advocate to speak

Severine von Tschamer Fleming, who is the director of The Greenhorns, a youth farming organization, will speak at the Matanuska Experiment Farm on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. The topic of Tschamer Fleming’s speech will be “Growing Local Food Systems.” The event is free and open to the public. The event is part of a nine-day speaking tour sponsored by the Alaska Food Policy Council and the Alaska Marine Conservation Council.

Fly fishing film festival is Sept. 24

Canadian magazine Fly Fusion will present the International Fly Fishing Film Festival on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Glenn Massay Theater in Palmer.

The festival includes short and feature-length films produced by professional filmmakers from all corners of the globe, showcasing the passion, lifestyle and culture of fly fishing.

Arkose Brewery will be serving their artfully crafted ales at the event. All beer sales will benefit a local nonprofit.

Advance tickets are $15 and are available for purchase at Mossy’s Fly Shop, Arkose Brewery and online at glennmassaytheater.com. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $18.

Pioneers of Alaska Convention in Palmer Sept. 22-26

Pioneers of Alaska Men's Igloo No. 31 and Women's Igloo No. 11 are hosting the Pioneers of Alaska 99th Grand Igloo Convention at Raven Hall in Palmer from Sept. 22 to 26.

Set Free Alaska plans annual event

Set Free Alaska will hold its annual event this year at Evangelo’s on Saturday, September 26 starting at 6:30 p.m. We have a great event planned this year with appetizers and great prizes. ‘Beer Meets Chocolate’ is Oct. 8

Arkose Brewery and JB Chocolatier of Palmer will host an anniversary tasting event, “Beer Meets Chocolate,” on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. A custom chocolate adorned with the Arkose logo was specially designed for the brewery’s fourth anniversary this year. Participants will receive four 8-ounce pours of hand-crafted ales, four hand-crafted chocolates and an anniversary glass for $25. There will be additional door prizes throughout the evening to include Arkose’s new stainless steel growler.

‘Harvest Recycle Fest’ set for Oct. 9

Valley Community for Recycling Solutions is hosting its second annual “Harvest Recycle Fest” on Friday, Oct. 9 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Palmer Depot. Tickets get attendees local food, fresh-pressed cider, brew and live music. Call 745-5544 for more information.

‘Beer Meets Canvas’ to be held Oct. 10

Arkose Brewery invites the community to “Sip. Relax. Create.” while enjoying a tasty brew at their monthly “Beer Meets Canvas” Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. For this anniversary event — Arkose turns four this year — $30 covers one beer, all art supplies needed, and a free anniversary glass to take home. There will also be door prizes.
