The Alaska WildBird Rehabilitation Center will hold its 8th Annual Fall Migration Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Best Western Lake Lucille Inn in Wasilla. A fundraiser for the center, the event will feature food catered by Marian Romano, a wine tasting, dessert auction, caricatures by Carlos Garcia, chainsaw carving by Scott Thompson, music by Matanuska Muse and celebrity auctioneers Marty and Cheryl Metiva. As always, there will also be birds on display from the center. There will also be a quilt raffle, silent auction and plenty of surprises. Tickets are $55 each or purchase a table for eight for $385. The Mat-Su Regional Hospital will host a 9/11 memorial tree-planting event on Friday, Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. at the hospital. Invocation will be given by pastor Stan Tucker.
Big Lake voters will decide on Oct. 27 whether or not to incorporate as a second-class city. Community “compass forums” are being held each Thursday leading up to the election from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Big Lake Library. The forum will include a panel of incorporation proponents followed by a question-and-answer session. Voters may vote in the upcoming election if they were registered to vote in the proposed city boundaries on or before July 1. Voters will vote by mail, and absentee in-person voting begins Oct. 12.
Alaskans for Palmer Hay Flats State Game Refuge will hold a dedication ceremony for the area’s new interpretive viewing tower on Friday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. The tower is locted at the refuge, which is located at mile 30.6 of the Glenn Highway. The event will feature a ceremony, light refreshments and dignitaries including elected officials, sponsors, donors and the board of directors. Author and nationally known speaker Pauletta Staley will speak at the Mat-Su Women’s Connection luncheon on Monday, Sept. 21 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Evangelo’s Restaurant in Wasilla. Staley will share how women leave a legacy by their lives and words. The event will also feature a panel of military women who will share the challenges they face in the military. Severine von Tschamer Fleming, who is the director of The Greenhorns, a youth farming organization, will speak at the Matanuska Experiment Farm on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. The topic of Tschamer Fleming’s speech will be “Growing Local Food Systems.” The event is free and open to the public. The event is part of a nine-day speaking tour sponsored by the Alaska Food Policy Council and the Alaska Marine Conservation Council.

Valley Performing Arts will open its 40th season on Friday, Sept. 11 with the production ‘Jane Eyre,’ based on the novel by Charlotte Bronte.
“A moving story for all times and a stunning portrayal of one of the world’s greatest heroines,” the play will run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 27.

The MTA Sports Center will host its annual “Fall Family Fling” this Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be bounce houses, face painting, balloon twisting, tumbling mats and more available for free and open to the public. Adults new to the center can also sample group exercise classes at the event, and take advantage of limited-time discounted membership enrollment and personal training specials.
A home education fair also will be held in conjunction with the event. Up to 40 vendors share everything from art classes, home school books, materials and supplies, horse-riding lessons, piano and music lessons, tutors and college prep information.

Canadian magazine Fly Fusion will present the International Fly Fishing Film Festival on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Glenn Massay Theater in Palmer.
The festival includes short and feature-length films produced by professional filmmakers from all corners of the globe, showcasing the passion, lifestyle and culture of fly fishing.
