Some think October is the month for the beginning of hibernation. Not in Palmer. October is when things start rocking, which is all part of living in a vibrant little town. Maybe in other places it is the time to snuggle down and this may still be your choice. But if you want fun community things to do, you have a huge menu of opportunities this week. Here are some highlights:
Wednesday—Palmer Chamber of Commerce meets at lunchtime at the Moose lodge. At 6pm there is “Birds of the Shore at Palmer Hayflats” Rhonda Horton prints and etchings at the Museum. It’s also trivia night at 203 Kombuchu and open mic night at Klondikes. Oula Dance and Community Yoga at Level Seven.
Thursday—Thursday Night runs at with Aktive Soles and Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers at the Kin Win Trailhead on Old Trunk Road. Contra Dances at the Salvation Army, sponsored by Mat-Su Traditional Music and Family Dance. Silent Community Meditation at Level Seven. Fall Soccer Training with Palmer Polar Vortex Soccer.
Friday—Fresh doughnuts with Red Beet, Birchtree Charter School Pastries for Parents; In the evening, there is the “First Friday at Poppy Lane” and next door at 203 Kombuchu, there’s an Art Show—Mural by Gala Studios—happening. There’s another Art Show at Bear Paw River Brewery on Friday night, featuring Melancholy Month and Calendar art by Barbara Hunt. And theres a Tackle Cancer fundraiser at the big Palmer Football Game—Potato Bowl. Don’t forget Momma Mia! at the College.
Saturday—“Louise Fest 2019” at Spring Creek Farm including food and music from 10-3. All day Octoberfest at the Palmer Ale House including games, food and beer steins and great music, Artisan Produce at the Wellness Market at NonEssentials, Ribbon cutting and ceremony for ADA-compliant trail, “Pink Wild Rose” at Government Peak Recreation Area with Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers, Reindeer Farm Fall Festival, Fifth Annual Oxtoberfest with Alaska Farmland Trust at the Musk Ox Farm, Alaska Birth Collective’s Fall Baby Fair at the Palmer Depot, Pistol Course, Family Health Fair at the hospital, Double Side Porch Sign Workshop at Peak Boutique, Wildlife Mosaics at Art Cafe, UFC 243 at Klondike Mike’s Bar, and a Hockey Rental Gear event with the Pioneer Amateur Hockey Association at the MTA events center. Happy Malamute Running is doing an Autumn Gold event on Lazy Mountain Lazy Moose Trail. There is also the grand opening party in Palmer for Hydrate Alaska on Denali Street, next to the Alaska Picker. Don’t forget Momma Mia! at the College.
Sunday—Salsa Cuban Dancing at 4-Corners, NSA Wrestling at the Depot, Handgun Skills Builder, Art Illustrated Journal with Palmer Painting Jam at Level Seven. Theres a weekly music jam session in afternoon at Vagabonds.
Monday—The wonderful weekly Happy Run starts at 6pm at Aktive Soles Performance Footwear. And there is Oula at Level Seven. Book signings at Fireside Books.
Tuesday—Tai Chi at Level Seven. Book signings at Fireside Books.
Palmer Wins!—Regardless of the election returns on Tuesday October 1, Palmer wins! How fortunate Palmer is to have really good hearted people running for office this year. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who voted and participated.
Cheers to the Yak!—It’s back and it looks great. This is a wonderful program for Palmer youth. Thanks to all involved and especially to dedicated Gordon with Humdinger’s Pizza who shares the space.
Get Ready for Alaska Book Week—Next week is Alaska Book Week and our favorite book store, Fireside Books, will have Alaska authors daily for book signings. The line up includes Mike Gordon, Tom Walker, Ellen Vande Visse, Nancy Pfeiffer, Linda Haas-Melchert, Barbara Hunt, James Misko, Toni Truesdell and Shawn Lyons.
