Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Barbara Arlene Pelchat, 86, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2023 at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital. She was born on October 19, 1936, the daughter of Walter F. Cooper and Gladys Mae (Mattingley) Cooper.
Barbara graduated from Palmer High School in Palmer, Alaska. She attended courses at Kellogg Community College pursuing her passion in photography. She married Ralph E. Pelchat who served 20 years in the United States Army serving overseas on December 30, 1954 and the two have spent the following 68 wonderful years together. They were members of the Battle Creek First Nazarene Church in Battle Creek, and loved to fellowship together. For the majority of her lifetime, Barbara was a homemaker and took exceptional care of her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed painting, drawing, and had a deep love for animals.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Ralph Pelchat; children, Cheryl Smith, Jackie Pelchat, Franklin Pelchat, Shawn Pelchat; grandchildren, Michael D. Blackburn, Lysset D. Lyons, Dylan W. Pelchat; brother, Duane Cooper. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Leo E. Pelchat and brother, Harvey Cooper.
A funeral service will be held at the Battle Creek First Church of the Nazarene, 12866 Beadle Lake Road, on Saturday, October 21, 2023, 11:00 am with Pastor Ray Duck officiating.
Interment will take place in the Fort Custer National Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
