Barbara “Bobbie” Ann Ryckman, 78, died May 29, 2013, surrounded by loved ones.
Because she always loved a party, a memorial potluck and celebration of life will be held during her birthday weekend from 2 to 7 p.m., Aug. 17 at her home on Big Lake. Everyone who loved her is invited.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her honor to the Alaska SPCA, American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
Bobbie was born Aug. 19, 1934, in Livermore, Calif., to August and Rose (Heenan) Ryckman.
She was a strong, independent, feisty woman who lived a full life on her terms. She participated on several high school teams such as bowling, basketball, swimming, band and cheerleading. After high school, she became a Jill-of-all-trades, working as a travel agent, bartender, waitress, restaurant owner, truck driver, order clerk and merchandiser. She retired from REI and moved to Big Lake, where she finally found her true home. Her lifelong interests included reading, kite flying, hunting, fishing and gardening. She loved the outdoors and could usually be found working in her yard. She took great pride in the home she built, her yard, her daughters, granddaughter and the many friends she felt blessed to have.
Bobbie’s spunk and tenacity will be missed by all, but her spirit will always be with us.
She was preceded in death by her parents, August and Rose Grisel; brother, August Grisel; sister, Lorraine George; and her beloved cat, Tink.
Surviving are her daughters, Shawn Robinson of Everett, Wash., and Kelley Robinson of Anchorage; granddaughter, Jennifer Turner of Everett, Wash.; dear friends, Janet, Linda and Helen; her caring Big Lake neighbors; and the members of the Big Lake Red Hats, with whom she shared many laughs and adventures. She felt truly blessed in the amazing friends she had.
