With heavy hearts we are announcing that Barbara Ruth Hulbert, age 81 passed away February 20th, 2025. She was a woman of great adventure. Born in 1943 in Mississippi to military parents, she moved all over the country and world. She resided in Japan, Spain, Germany, and throughout the United States. She eventually chose the great state of Alaska to call her home for 55 years. Her yearning for adventure continued to grow as she pursued passions that included dog mushing, horseback riding, and camping. She achieved her dream of having a farm with horses and a variety of other animals. Summers meant traveling all over the Matanuska Valley by horseback, camping and exploring in the mountains. Winters were filled with mushing in her younger years, skiing later on. Her life was dedicated to education, both in learning and teaching. Barbara earned a double Master’s degree in Math and Adult Education, and spent many years teaching and tutoring at Mat-Su College. Always encouraging her students to overcome their struggles, she helped them on their path. She loved music, art, gardening, and learning about all the wonders of life. Her most precious success was family and loved ones. Under her wing, all were welcome, given wide varieties of support and tons of love. Many called her mom and she adored them all. She would say that her greatest achievement is her four children and the life that she and her husband curated. In her words, her husband was the best thing that ever happened to her. Barbara lived boldly, with a sense of humor that followed her every step. Her joy shined through all the way to the end. She is survived by her husband, Paul Hulbert, her children, Dean Moore, Shiloh Moore, Amber Musselman, Luci Hepler, as well as twelve grandchildren. Funeral services will be held March 6th, 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Big Lake, Alaska.
