BART O. SCHLEYERFormer Wasilla resident Bart O. Schleyer, 49, died while on a September hunting trip at Reid Lake in the Yukon, Canada.Mr. Schleyer was born March 5, 1955, in Cheyenne, Wyo., to Otis and Lula Rose Schleyer. He was a graduate of Montana State University in Bozeman, with a masterÕs degree in wildlife biology.He worked on the interagency grizzly study in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming for 14 years. After moving to Alaska in 1989, he worked at FosterÕs Taxidermy seasonally through 2003, and most recently as an assistant guide for Cinder River Guides. In 1994, he began working in Russia with the Hornacher Institute, capturing and collecting research information on Siberian tigers, Asian brown bears, Himalayan black bears and snow leopards. His expertise working with dangerous animals led him to more research projects on tigers with the London Zoological Society in Sumatra, Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal and Bangladesh.Mr. Schleyer was an avid traditional bow hunter who hunted in Alaska, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico, Africa and Canada. He was also a bow maker and wildlife artist. His loved ones said, ÒHe was a kind and generous man who always saw the good in everyone. He had a great sense of humor and would explode with laughter.ÓHe is survived by his son, Artyom Perov; ArtyomÕs mother, Tanya Perova; father, Otis Schleyer and sister and brother-in-law, Claudia and Jim Downey.No memorial service is planned. His ashes will be returned to the Brooks Range in Alaska at a later date.A gathering of friends for a potluck dinner will take place at the American Legion Post 35 in Wasilla, Mile 46 Parks Hwy., from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday.Please bring a dish to pass and a memory to share.
