Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Betty Lee Porter, 85, died Jan. 9, 2012, at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer.
She was born March 13, 1926 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She received a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Ohio.
She was a teacher in Glendale, Ariz., until she retired in 1991. She moved to Alaska from New Mexico in 1998. She lived in Hooper Bay from 1998-2000, then in Sand Point from 2006-09. Her special interests included painting, reading and watching political issues on television. Betty touched many lives around the country. She was a friend to her daughter’s friends and an influence on all of her students. Her sense of humor and friendly smile will be missed.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne L. Perkins; son-in-law, Kerry “Gus” Perkins; and granddaughter, Sara Perkins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, E.R. Porter.
Interment will be at Rest Haven Cemetery in Glendale, Ariz. Arrangements entrusted to Legacy Kehl’s Palmer Chapel in Palmer.
