Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Big Lake resident Bobby L. Spears, 73, died Nov. 27, 2009, at the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer.
Per Bobby’s request, no services will be held. His ashes will be spread in Big Lake and buried with his mother in Arkansas.
Mr. Spears was born April 22, 1936, to Luther T. and Maudie (Doggett) Spears in Warren, Ark. He completed his GED upon joining the Air Force in 1953 at age 17. Mr. Spears was first stationed in Alaska at Elmendorf Air Force Base in 1954, served our nation during Vietnam and returned to Alaska in 1970, where he was stationed briefly at Fort Wainwright then at Fort Greely and Fort Richardson before he moved to Eagle River in 1973. Mr. Spears retired from the Army after 20 years of service in 1974. He then worked for Xerox from 1974 retiring again in 1987. Mr. Spears moved to Big Lake in 1989, where he has resided since.
Mr. Spears was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of seven years, Darline Spears of Big Lake; daughter, Rose Kuiper of Anchorage; sons, Jeff Spears of Redmond, Wash., and Joe Spears of Anchorage; two nieces, Meredith Spears and Maggie Spears; former spouse, Janet Spears of Eagle River; brothers, Luke Spears and his family of Huntsville, Ala., and Bill Spears and his family of Camden, Ark.
Arrangements were by Valley Funeral Home & Crematory.
