Brian Joseph Tomes, 45, died at home on July 19, 2011.

He was born to Danny Tomes and Kathryn Cooksey (Kaminski) July 2, 1966, at Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington state. When he was about 2 years old, they moved to Alaska. Danny and Kathryn also had another son together, Jefffrey Damon Tomes. After Danny and Kathryn divorced, she married Lou Kaminski and had a son, Tim Kaminski.

Brian graduated from Save High School in 1984. In 2000, he met his current wife Taren Peltola, and they were married Oct. 8, 2006. Although Brian never had children of his own, he took on the responsibility of raising Taren’s two children, Kurtis and Kayde Kemp.

Brian had a love of the outdoors and a passion to have the greenest lawn and best garden. He was so proud of his lawn. Everyone complimented him on having such a beautiful lawn, and that always put a smile on his face. His other passion was moose hunting up at his mom’s place.

Brian was preceded in death by his father Danny Tomes; grandparents, Joseph and Helen Cooksey; his favorite uncle, Stanley Rydberg; uncle, David Cooksey; father- and mother-in-law, Ronald and Geraldine Peltola. His uncle, Robert Cooksey, died two days later on July 21, 2011.

Surviving are his mom, Kathryn Kaminski; his second mom, Brenda Arney; brothers, Jeffrey Tomes and Timothy Kaminski (Emily Schepis); niece, Harmony Tomes; great-niece, Collette Tomes; aunts and uncles, Laurie and Ron Derybowski, Lisa and Doug Jones, and Mary and Ed Pleskin; his wife, Taren Peltola; stepchildren, Kurtis and Kayde Kemp; sisters-in-law, Dana Peltola, Dorine Newman (Terry Newman), Kari Peltola (Kirk Gunther) and Ronda Peltola (Dave Miller); brother-in-law Gary Peltola (Bernadette Chaney); and many aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.

Memorial services for Brian are at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 30 at his home in Wasilla, 300 W Crestwood Ave. A potluck barbecue will follow.

Cremation services were provided by the Cremation Society of Alaska.
