Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Carmen Marie Hattenburg passed into the hands of the Lord Sept. 3, 2014.
Carmen was born May 28, 1963, in Rapid City, South Dakota to Larry and Dotty Whiting.
As a small child she lived in Rapid City, South Dakota, before moved to Palmer May 1971. Alaska has been Carmen’s home ever since. She graduated from Palmer High School in 1981. She met the love of her life Russel Jay Hattenburg while working with the family business. They were married in Nov. 1985. Russel and Carmen continued to reside in the Palmer area.
Carmen was a stay at home mom raising her two children, Dustin and Shelby, as well as helping Russ with their family business. Her life was centered around her family, community of friends and business adventures. She was known for her generosity, kind heart, genuine affection for all and chatty outgoing personality. There were no strangers in her life, only friends that she had not met. She enjoyed doing for others in measures too many to count, making her creative cakes, attending family sporting events, traveling to the family home in Kino Bay, Mexico, cooking, drag racing, sewing and camping.
She is survived by her husband, Russel Jay Hattenburg; son, Dustin Tyler Hattenburg; daughter, Shelby Marie Barlow and husband, Ronnie; parents, Dotty and Ken Elmore and Larry and Roberta Whiting; sister, Janet Garrod and husband, Art; brothers-in-law, Randy Hattenburg and wife, Bonnie, Scott Hattenburg and wife, Penny; nieces, and nephews, Kalea and Samuel Stumbo, Sianna and Drew Mayes, Kylie and John DuPont, Bryce Hattenburg, Sarah Hattenburg, Tara Garrod, Brenna Hattenburg and Trey Garrod; great niece, Cameryn Hale and IraMay Stumbo.
Her love of family, enthusiasm and kind heart will be sorely missed by all those she has touched.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Kehl’s Palmer Mortuary.
A celebration of life open house is planned from 2 to 5 p.m., Sept. 7, at their residence, 6246 Visions Crest Blvd., Palmer.
