Carol Moorman

Carol Moorman was the 2nd of 5 children born in 1943 in Sherrill, Iowa. Her mother, Martha, and father, Ambrose, made a home on a small dairy farm that formed the essence of whom she would become, developing a strong work ethic, deep faith, and sense of family. Even though there were many farm chores to be done, the children found time to play games and pranks. Once, tying scrap twine around their neighbor’s gate. She attended a small brick Lutheran church where her mother played the organ. Attending and being active in church continued to be important throughout her life.

She attended primary school in a one room schoolhouse. She was called on frequently to help the younger students in Math. When she graduated into secondary school and had to attend the “big” city school, she would be jealous of her peers’ lunches of bologna on Wonder Bread. Her lunches consisted of fried chicken and homemade apple pie.

After graduating high school, she began her career in the insurance industry. First, starting out in clerical, then being promoted to adjuster, supervisor and then in management. Later in life, she was sent to different locations to “clean up” the offices.

Son, Joel, was born in 1968. She faced challenges being an unmarried, single mother. She knew how to take care of herself. She persevered through these challenges, along with the challenges she faced working in the male-dominated insurance industry. The greatest achievement she claims is her son, even though, at times, he was a bratty kid.

Memorial service for Carol will be on 1/21/23 at 1 p.m. St. John Lutheran Church in Palmer. Donations can be made in Carol’s name to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. 200 Hawkins Drive. Iowa City, IA 52242.
