Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Memorial Services for Chester “Don” Calvert, 57, are at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, May 15, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 10355 Palmer-Wasilla Highway, with Pastor Diane Krauszer officiating.
A potluck reception will follow at the church, and please bring a dish to share. Inurnment will be June 10 at Fort Richardson National Cemetery at 3 p.m., with military honors.
Don died May 5, 2011, at Mat-Su Regional Hospital from complications from lymphoma. He was born Sept. 11, 1953, in Phoenix, Ariz. He graduated from Escondido High School in California. He came to Alaska in the early 1970s while serving in the Army. He was honorably discharged in 1977 at a rank of sergeant.
He enjoyed reading science fiction/fantasy books and watching Sci-Fi movies. He liked tinkering with cars and mechanical things, and also enjoyed playing computer games.
According to his family, “Don had a kind and generous heart and was always there for a friend in need. He will be greatly missed by all his friends, family and his best friend and fiancé, Mary and her daughter, Veronica.”
Preceding him in death were his father, Henry Orville Calvert; and his mother, Joyce Mildred Oliver Calvert.
He is survived by his daughter, Leslie Calvert; sons, Brian, Corey and Justin Calvert; brothers, Eddie and Gary Calvert; and grandsons, Mason and Logan.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be directed to the American Cancer Society, 3851 Piper St., Ste. U240, Anchorage, AK 99508 or online at cancer.org.
Arrangements were by Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel of Wasilla.
