Dale C. Haggard

Dale Haggard died on March 1st, 2021, at his home on Flat Lake, Alaska, from COPD and recently diagnosed lung cancer.

Dale was born on October 5th, 1940, in Vegreville, Alberta, to Warren and Ethel Haggard. The family lived in nearby Ranfurly until 1946, when they immigrated to Phoenix, Oregon, and attained their American citizenship.

Dale graduated from Phoenix High School, having married his childhood sweetheart, Glenna, during their senior year. Their daughter, Pamela, was born in 1958, followed by a son, Dale Craig, in 1961.

Dale owned and operated a sheet metal shop in Phoenix, but sensing better opportunities in Alaska, he moved his family and business to Anchorage in 1969. Dale was self-employed, primarily in the plumbing and heating business, for the next 20 years.

After his first marriage ended in 1978, he met and married Carolyn. Their son, David, was born in 1985, and they moved to Flat Lake.

After the Exxon Valdez disaster, Dale went to work for the oil spill response company, SERVS. He worked in Valdez until 2000, when he and Carolyn built a boat storage business and fabrication shop in Big Lake. They designed and built many pontoon boat tops and enclosures until 2015, when Dale’s declining health forced his “early” retirement at age 75.

Dale was generous to a fault. He was always the first to lend a hand to others, and always gave 110% to everything he undertook. He had no filter, and wasn’t shy about sharing his opinions, in language that could not be misunderstood. His many colorful expressions will be remembered forever by the many people who knew and loved him. Alaska has more “colorful” characters than any place on Earth. Sadly, there’s one fewer with Dale’s departure.

Dale is survived by his wife, Carolyn; daughter, Pamela Hebert of Phoenix, Oregon; son and daughter-in-law, Dale Craig and Janet of Flat Lake; son and soon to be daughter-in-law, Dave and Jasmine Chambers of Big Lake; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

His ashes will be scattered on Flat Lake this summer. Dale was a supporter of Special Olympics, and donations to that organization in his memory would be welcomed.
