Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Sutton resident David Robert Fortin, Jr., 31, died Feb. 13 in Sutton.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday at Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel in Wasilla, with Pastor Rick Lyon officiating. David’s cremated remains will be returned to Maine and scattered at Cundy’s Harbor in the spring.
David was born May 11, 1977, in Augusta, Maine. He was a graduate of Mt. Ararat High School.
He came to Alaska in 1997, and had resided in Wasilla, Palmer and Sutton. He worked as a framer and other aspects of construction. He enjoyed working on his vehicles, riding 4-wheeler’s and snowmachines, paint ball and tinkering with anything mechanical.
His family said: “Skyla and Alexis held a special place in David’s heart. They were his girls. He would try to do what he could for those close to him in any way that he could. He loved the outdoors and pushing any vehicle to the limit.”
He was preceded in death by his father, David R. Fortin, Sr.; grandmother, Marian R. Shontz and grandfather, Clement E. Fortin.
Survivors are his mother, Christine L. Shontz Fortin of South Portland, Maine; brother and sister-in-law, Michael S. and Mindy Fortin of Wasilla; brother, Timothy M. Fortin of Fayetteville, N.C.; children, Alexis and Skyla Fortin of Palmer, and Bradley and Austin Fortin of Wasilla; grandmother, Doris Fortin of Augusta, Maine; grandparents, Rev. Wayne K., Jr. and Suzanne Shontz of Thompson, Penn., uncles and aunts, Daniel and Jo-Ann Fortin of Augusta, Maine, and Wayne K. III and Lisa Shontz of Reading, Vt.; step-mother, Carol Fortin of Westrock, Maine; cousins, Megan of South Portland, Maine; and Maria and Gabrielle of Reading, Vt.; and several great aunts and uncles and second cousins.
