Longtime Alaska resident Donald C. Brummer, 81, passed away June 25, 2015.
A viewing is from 4 to 7 p.m., July 1 at Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel, 1015 South Check St. Wasilla. The funeral Mass is at 11 a.m., July 2 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a prior rosary at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.
Donald Brummer was born March 16, 1934, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Cyril Ernest Brummer and Helen Katherine Krech. He married his beloved Madonna Rose Leary on July 26, 1955, in Wiesbaden, Germany, and after 51 years of marriage she passed.
He brought his family to Alaska in 1963 while serving in the U.S. Army as the Senior non-commissioned officer in charge at the Hercules Missile Fire Control /Radar Technician at the Nike Missile Site. He retired March 30, 1973, as a Chief Warrant Officer W-2. His medals include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and both Silver and Bronze Stars.
Don will be greatly missed by family and friends as a kind-hearted, caring, loving and a gentle soul with a great sense of humor. Always willing to give a helping hand with a ready smile, he was an inspiration to his fellow seniors and a pillar of strength to the family. He provided a shining example of how to live life under God and instilled in us the convictions to stand up for what is right.
He was an avid fisherman; as many as seven salmon a day would jump into his boat to give his arm a rest (St. Peter must have been at his side). After retirement, he became a small business owner, which allowed him to spend his days with his beloved wife, children and grandchildren and bring home the catch of the day.
He is survived by eight sons and daughters, Jeffrey (Michelle) Brummer, Lois (Bill) Walker, Daniel (Teresa) Brummer, Mary (Joe) Fleming, Mitchell Brummer, Florine (Alan) Fetters, Larry (Socorro) Brummer, and Kathy (Steve) Barenburg; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith and I’m going home to be with God and my wife”.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Mat-Su Food Bank.
